If you use nextcloud, you could also use other text editors on mobile phone like joplin, qOwnNotes, etc. Any headaches in managing my own nextcloud instance (and just like managing any of your own infrastructure, there are always costs), are outweighed by all the features that i legitimately use/benefit from nextcloud. Side note: i use nextcloud for general file synching, rss/feed reading, and other functions.so it was not setup only/specifically for notes.the note taking just came along as an extra benefit. I do lack some advanced features that zim wiki would bring, like linkages, some color formatting, styles.but for my workflow i found them not to be ultra necessary anyway. For actually synching and drafting of the text/note files, i have the nextcloud mobile app as well as the nextcloud notes app on my phone ( ).so now i can jot down notes anywhere that i carry my phone. I draft conventional old text files (though i do use markdown).and save the files in a nextcloud folder to enable sync anywhere. My intent was for family (only 3 people) and i to use it.but honestly, most of the time it is only me. I actually have my own little nextcloud instance running on a $5/month digital ocean virtual private server. I have ones for all kinds of things, like interviewing, 1-1s, and architecture design outline. I could also export to Markdown if I ever wanted to migrate. The syntax feels a little strange to me but I rarely need to edit raw files. But once you get streamlined it just works. Takes a little configuration out of the box to get just right, system dependencies, links opening in right browser, plugins, shortcuts, fonts.

A bunch of older disks (10 to 15 bucks each from ebay) set into a pool with multiple vDev's for SSD speeds off of spinning rust sounds like a lot of fun for a gaming machine/ripper encoder. Hopefully by the time I get to that point Ryzen will be stable so I can grab a Threadripper and go with it. Honestly I have thought about doing desktop builds where everything is virtualized on one machine and use FreeNAS as the store point. Once I found ZFS and how it can work I was hooked. Is this 100% true, not sure but from the guy I was working with at the time and the articles I was reading I basically stayed away from raid.

I even heard of some horror stories where updating software has taken out an array and flashing back was either not an option or it didn't work. Pretty much if you buy a hardware raid controller you may as well buy two so you have a spare and make sure they both work with the array because when you need to get a second one because the first went bad you will either not be able to find one or it will be a different revision and incompatible. One of the ones that really made me shy away was if the controller just ghosts there are times where it can basically kill everything. I have done a little hardware raid stuff and from my understanding there are just a ton of issues that can come up.
